WGI - A History In 1996, Wasaya Corporation purchased Mr. Frank Kelner’s 12.5% of the Wasaya Airways common shares. In 1998, Wasaya Corporation acquired the final 12.5% interest in Wasaya Airways by purchasing Mr. Terry Deluce’s shares which enabled Wasaya Corporation to enjoy 100% ownership of Wasaya Airways Ltd. In 1999, Wasaya Airways transitioned from offering a Scheduled Passenger Service to a Scheduled Charter Service concept, which allowed management to fully concentrate on its core business: the Cargo Operation and Passenger Charter Service In 1999, Wasaya Airways started a subsidiary company, Wasaya Prop Shop Inc. to operate as a stand-alone. In 2000, Wasaya Corporation and Wasaya Airways Ltd. restructured resulting in the formation of Wasaya Airways Limited Partnership. In 2000, Wasaya Petroleum Limited Partnership, a new petroleum company was announced In 2001, Wasaya Airways formed Air Delivery Unit (ADU) In 2003, Scheduled passenger service was re-introduced. Wasaya Airways purchased some of the Northern Assets of Bearskin Airlines from Sioux Lookout and north of Red Lake. In 2004, Wasaya Corporation and Wasaya Airways restructured resulting in the formation of Wasaya Group Inc. (WGI) Wasaya Chiefs expressed a strong desire to have a structure in place that will sustain the growth and profitability of the Group. In November 2004, Muskrat Dam First Nation and Pikangikum First Nation entered into business partnership with Wasaya Airways LP. Also on November 2004, the Master Agreement was signed by all original Wasaya shareholders. On December 5, 2006, Muskrat Dam First Nation and Pikangikum First Nations entered into full partnership with Wasaya Group Inc. On December 6, 2006, the final Master Agreement was approved and signed by the Wasaya Chiefs and the Board of Directors witnessed the official signing. On October 22-24, 2006 and February 6-7, 2007, the Wasaya communities EDOs Steering Committee was formed and they recommended development of a Wasaya Regional Strategic Plan. In March, 2007 and April, 2007, Management and Board of Directors training took place to enhance professional development. On April 3, 2007, Keewaywin First Nation entered into business Partnership with Wasaya Airways LP. April 3, 2007 - three community Stores from Nibinamik, Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug, and Muskrat Dam signed an agreement with Pratts/TruSer/Triple4, forming the new Buying Group. Also on April 3, 2007, Wasaya kicked off the CT Scanner Fundraising activities to raise 2 million to purchase a CT Scanner by contributing over $1/2 million for the new Sioux Lookout Menoyawin Health Centre (SLMHC) including installation for the new hospital as envisioned by late Grace Teskey. Wasaya shareholders pledged $505,000 of their earnings towards the Project. In Dec 2007, WGI announced a new venture partnership with Lakehead Marine & Industrial. The new company, "Metal Ahnokeewin LP", is an industrial metal fabrication and repair plant based in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The new Company will be busy fabricating Bulk Fuel Storage tanks for remote First Nation communities and other customers. The plant also has the capacity to serve the forestry & mining sector as well as a variety of industrial needs. In July 2008, a Credit Union for Bearskin Lake First Nation, " Anishnabe Shooniyaakamik" opened as a pilot project begun by Wasaya Weecheewaywin & Wasaya Community Economic Development Corporation. In Dec 2008, WGI & CANOP formed a joint Venture Company called WASCAN TERMINALS INC. in Thunder Bay for purchasing, storage, sales and delivery of Bulk Fuel. In Dec 2008 WGI & Bamaji Air Inc began a Joint Venture Agreement that would see WGI become a minority investor in Bamaji. This will compliment the WALP existing fleet of 25 aircraft by adding Bamaji's compliment of 6 smaller aircraft (including float planes) which will enable...for example...tourists to be booked on one carrier all the way to their destinations and back. In Dec 2008 WGI Launced the "Celebrating 20 Years 1989-2009 Campaign" to honor the visionaries, shareholders and other key people involved with Wasaya since its envisionment days. In Dec 2008 WGI Fundraising for SLMHC's CT SCANNER UNIT broke the $1 Million milestone at a Fundraising Banquet in Thunder Bay. In April 2009 WGI through Wasaya Community Economic Development Corporation received 1/2 million from FEDNOR to coordinate the "Retail Advisor Project" designed to help build management capacity in Wasaya Commmunity owned Stores. In September 2009 WGI partnered with SLAAMB (Sioux Lookout Area Aboriginal Management Board) to create up to 40 new positions for Aboriginal people in Aviation related jobs. The aviation sector in Canada has the lowest level of aboriginal participation of all federally regulated industries.
